Future Proofing
>
Our clients went down the process of having a permanent house designed and consented for them only to find the extremely costly price of building on Waiheke Island meant they couldn’t build their dream holiday home, they looked to a removable house solution, to allow them to build a more permanent house in the future when their budget could allow for it.
The solution was a fully customised full architectural “Evoke 14m x 4m” build on a trailer to accomodate the needs for the family of 6 (mum and dad and 4 boys). The solution future proofed by having another 6mx3m cabin on the site with a toilet when the boys grew up to have their own sleeping accomodation. This solution allowed the Evoke cabin to be towed off the site when the client could afford a more permanent build.
The Evoke cabin was consented to allow future proofing and on-sell ability. Low maintenance materials were used throughout, such as natural Weathertex cladding which requires no painting. The Evoke cabin was designed for a HIGH wind zone and Sea-Spray zone for future proofing for any future purchaser virtually allowing the Evoke cabin to be sited anywhere.
Future proofing includes insulation designed over and above the new H1 requirements, LED lighting and gas califont heating to reduce electricity bills.
Liveability
>
The clients wanted a tiny home that had the same feeling as a normal home - a seemingly impossible task! However the result was achieved by Huia Living by providing two generous sized bedrooms; customised 2 double bunk beds to accompany their 4 children; the dining table replaced with a wrap around kitchen bar that allowed for 6 bar stools (to eliminate the need for a dining table); over height vaulted ceilings to give the appearance of more space; bathroom with double basins; and a full sized kitchen.
Every nook of the home has been designed to maximum space (like the kitchen nook to hide the toaster and kettle). Full height large sliding doors open to a full sized deck.
Workmanship
>
We built this cabin like all of our cabins, to the highest of quality and built to last 50 years.
All the materials gone into this build are of the highest quality also, matching the quality nature of the build. We wanted to ensure the clients had the same feeling as living in a quality built architectural home.
Functionality/Innovation Design
>
We provided a functional floor layout that worked for the large family of 6. This included having the bedrooms separated at each end of the house so mum and dad could have their own ‘quiet time’ (sometimes difficult in a large family).
Innovative and bespoke design incorporated double cavity sliding doors to allow the bathroom and laundry to be closed off, however when fully open, the kitchen stone-top bench-top runs through into the laundry to give the appearance and feeling of a lot larger kitchen.
As mentioned above, the kitchen bar accommodates 6 bar stools to elimate the requirement for a dining table to give a larger living space.
The coolest feature was individual niches in the children’s bedroom at their bunk-beds which have a reading light, power-point and USB, USC charging points so they can place their nicknacks, fans and phone chargers.
At the rear entry, a wet room was constructed to allow for shoe and clothes drying storage.
Aesthetic Appeal & Special Features
>
This Evoke cabin is a truely architecturally designed cabin. It features (possibly like no other cabin in New Zealand), a non-symmetric bi-sloping roof made from Euro-style span-lok colour steel which is the main architectural feature on this cabin.
Dark natural colours were a must for the Resource consent on the strict Waiheke Island site, so incorporated black window frames and dark painted cladding and colour steel roof and flashings. The large continuous barge flashing ties the roof into the walls.
From an interior perspective, natural contemporary colour scheme was chosen for easy maintenance and to give the cabin a real ‘beach-vibe’. Timber flooring throughout was chosen so it makes it easy to brush up sand from the beach when the kids come back to the house for pizza after a long beach day.
The interior walls used grooved MDF for easy cleaning, and ensure no gib-stopping to ensure no cracking when moving the cabin. The ceiling is PVC which is virtually maintenance free.
