Future Proofing
>
This tiny home was thoughtfully designed with the future in mind from the very beginning. As the first home of a young professional couple, it serves as a smart long-term investment—built to support them through multiple life stages while retaining strong resale value.
Inside, the home offers two comfortable queen-sized bedrooms and a versatile office that can easily serve as a third, smaller bedroom when needed. Two full bathrooms have been carefully placed for practicality and privacy. The first is in the main house, just off the lounge, and doubles as an ensuite for the master bedroom. The second, located in the connected POD between the second and third bedrooms, features a full-sized bath and laundry tower—ideal for guests or as a dedicated children's bathroom in the future.
Clever storage solutions are integrated throughout, including built-in wardrobes in both main bedrooms, a loft above the main house bathroom, ample cabinetry in the spacious kitchen, and a laundry tower in the second bathroom. As family needs evolve, there is ample room to keep essential items organized and accessible.
With full insulation, double-glazed windows, and a heat pump, the home will remain warm and dry throughout the seasons. Durable materials such as Colorsteel cladding and roofing, steel framing, and aluminium joinery ensure minimal maintenance. Whether the owners are working full-time, travelling, or raising a family, the home is built to offer lasting comfort and peace of mind.
Liveability
>
This tiny home is made up of two connected structures—a main Tiny House and an internally linked POD. Together, they create a layout that balances shared living with quiet, private spaces. The central open-plan kitchen and living area forms the heart of the home—a comfortable, welcoming space for daily life, family time, and entertaining.
Multiple bedrooms provide flexibility for growing families, guests, or working from home. With two queen-sized bedrooms and a third smaller room that can function as a study or additional bedroom, the home can easily adapt to changing needs. Storage has been carefully considered, with built-in wardrobes in the two main bedrooms, an overhead loft, ample kitchen cabinetry, generous vanities, and a laundry tower with an integrated linen cupboard. These thoughtful inclusions make it easy to keep the space organised and clutter-free—essential for long-term livability in a compact footprint.
The POD works well as a guest wing, complete with its own bathroom and sleeping area. This allows visitors to enjoy privacy while the owners maintain their own routine and space.
Natural light fills the home through large windows and doors, enhancing the sense of space and calm. A skylight with a motorised blind was installed specifically to support the owner’s sleep needs, allowing precise control over light for a restful environment. Blinds and curtains throughout the home also help regulate temperature and brightness, contributing to year-round comfort and a cosy atmosphere. A heat pump provides efficient heating and cooling, while insulation, double glazing, and soft furnishings work together to maintain a stable, comfortable indoor environment in all seasons.
The fully equipped kitchen, with its generous bench space and practical layout, is designed for ease of use—whether cooking for two or feeding a full household. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, the home comfortably supports up to five people. The layout, storage, and climate control features all contribute to a space that’s not only functional now, but remains practical and enjoyable to live in for years to come.
Workmanship
>
At Cocoon Tiny Homes, quality workmanship is at the heart of everything we do. This home is a strong example of our commitment to precision, care, and high-performance materials throughout the build process.
The structure is built with steel framing atop a Duragalv chassis as standard—providing a lightweight yet durable skeleton that ensures long-term structural integrity and peace of mind. The Colorsteel cladding and roofing, finished in New Denim Blue and Cloud, are premium-grade products designed to withstand New Zealand’s varied climate. Installed with meticulous care, they create a watertight, ventilated, and vermin-resistant envelope that will require minimal upkeep for years to come.
Craftsmanship is evident in the details: aluminium joinery has been installed with a negative detail, showcasing the precision and care of our build team, and adding a refined architectural finish to the windows. Inside, the kitchen cabinetry was custom-built by our experienced in-house cabinet makers, designed specifically to suit the client's preferences and spatial needs.
Timber features throughout the home add natural warmth and visual interest—most notably the rimu floating shelves in the kitchen and a beautifully crafted rimu balustrade in the loft. These handcrafted elements are balanced by the cedar soffit linings, which visually link the interior timber detailing to the home’s exterior, enhancing the overall cohesion and design continuity.
Each element—from the structural framework to the finishing details—has been executed with care, delivering a home that is functional, beautiful, and also built to last.
Functionality/Innovation Design
>
The internal walkway connecting the Tiny House and POD gives this home a layout that closely resembles a traditional residence, enhancing both functionality and flow. Large doors throughout the home promote excellent indoor-outdoor flow while maximizing natural light and ventilation, contributing significantly to the overall comfort and livability.
At 60m² in total, the design offers flexibility to meet the family’s evolving needs over time. Positioned centrally, the open-plan living room and kitchen open onto a covered deck, creating a natural hub for family interaction and gatherings. This central space also serves to separate the two sleeping and bathroom areas, effectively creating two distinct private zones—an uncommon feature in smaller tiny homes that adds valuable privacy and adaptability.
The gable roof design allows for double-height ceilings in both the living area and master bedroom, contributing to a sense of spaciousness and light. This extra height made it possible to install ceiling fans, pendant lighting, and floating timber shelves without compromising headroom or circulation space. Additionally, the gable roof facilitated the inclusion of an in-ceiling loft above one of the bathrooms, providing essential extra storage—an important consideration in tiny home living.
Overall, this layout is a simple, yet highly functional and efficient use of space across two connected structures.
Aesthetic Appeal & Special Features
>
This home showcases classic lines and colour choices in a design aesthetic that is timeless and understated.
The exterior features vertical corrugate Colorsteel cladding in New Denim Blue, paired with a Colorsteel roof and aluminium joinery in Cloud. This unique combination gives the home a stylish, classic look with a modern edge. Windows have been installed with a negative detail—a subtle feature that enhances the clean architectural lines of the exterior. Cedar soffit linings add an earthy element and create visual continuity between the exterior and the home’s interior timber accents.
Inside, calming hues of blue are used throughout, complemented by contrasting touches of white, black, concrete, and stained timber. White trims and fittings in the bedrooms and kitchen/living room add softness, while timber elements—such as the fans, light fixtures, benchtop, and rimu floating shelves in the kitchen—contribute warmth and natural texture. The rimu balustrade on the loft continues this theme, tying in beautifully with the rest of the timber detailing.
In the bathrooms, black and concrete accents lend a subtle industrial edge. A particularly meaningful design choice can be found in the splashbacks, where unique tiles from the client’s late father have been thoughtfully incorporated—bringing a deeply personal touch to each bathroom. The V-groove lined ceiling and negative detailing on the interior walls lead the eye through the space, echoing the window detailing on the exterior and contributing to the home’s cohesive and considered design.
