About this Entry
Future Proofing
>
This custom Raglan Tiny Home has been thoughtfully designed as a forever home - adaptable for every stage of life. Its single-level layout eliminates stairs entirely, making it retirement- and elderly-friendly while providing effortless accessibility for all ages.
Built to be fully off-grid, the house offers independence from mains utilities, keeping operating costs low and ensuring resilience in changing times. Inside, the bathroom has been planned with space and plumbing provisions for a future washing machine, allowing the home to evolve with its owners’ needs without costly renovations.
Every material and system has been chosen for durability, low maintenance, and sustainability - We use the highest quality of materials that will last, so the home not only meets today’s needs, but is ready for tomorrow’s as well.
The ‘Back’ side door is for future thinking that entering the home is possible from that side too. Not limiting access whatsoever.
The clients will also move the home around on site and eventually choose its forever spot. To maximise views, sun and weather, this design allows both sides of the home to be open to options - with large openings and glass on both sides of the home so wherever they decide to place the home they’re covered.
Liveability
>
This tiny house has been crafted for comfort and practicality - where function meets form. Delivering big on liveability and a healthy home. Clever storage solutions maximise every inch: under-bed drawers, generous hanging space, overhead storage, seating with built in draws, built-in wood storage beside the fireplace keep the home organised and clutter-free. Soft close draws for luxury and pre finished surfaces provide for utmost ease of cleaning.
The kitchen rivals those of full-sized homes, with a large, solid, recycled Rimu bench for meal preparation, a full-sized oven with four hobs, and a full-sized fridge/freezer to support everyday cooking and entertaining. The inclusion of a wine rack - a personal touch requested by the owners, former wine growers! As well as future microwave space if ever needed. The clients choose all draws in the home making access to all kitchen goods a breeze.
A spacious 1200 x 900mm shower brings luxury to the bathroom. A window for natural light and to expel moisture straight way along with the extractor fan. Discrete insect screens allow fresh breezes without unwelcome guests. Fully off-grid, the home offers freedom and security without sacrificing modern conveniences. The large, open-plan living area is completely free of obstructions, creating a fun and versatile space where young children can explore, spill, and play with ease. Every feature has been designed to enhance daily life, making the home a place that is not only practical, but a joy to live in for the long term and to create special memories with the client’s growing grandchildren.
We pride our homes on their healthy standard, using healthy products such as Natural Paint co. (NZ made paint free of VOCs) we choose the most eco products from start to finish to give our home owners a home that feels as good as it looks.
Workmanship
>
Every element of this build showcases craftsmanship, care, and a deep respect for materials. From the inside the walls to the finest interior details, the home is built to last with finishes and features that speak of both quality and individuality. There’s no tiny home in NZ like it.
The exterior cladding is a story in itself: Shou Sugi Ban boards, milled (by our clients) from Japanese cedar planted by the client’s father 60 years ago. We machined them into cladding and professionally charred them to create a striking, durable finish that honours both family history and traditional craftsmanship in line with the Japanese techniques. Along with every jamb, architrave, ceiling lining, cavity door, and floating shelves - all handcrafted using the client’s own homegrown Japanese cedar too!! One of a kind - workmanship went to EXTREME lengths for this build!
High-spec PVC thermal break windows with Low-E glass and argon fill provide superior insulation and comfort. Inside, solid timber bench tops (recycled Rimu) Native NZ Timbers are custom-made by our own team.
We have used NZ Paint Co paint, proudly New Zealand-made and free of VOCs, ensuring a healthy indoor environment. The home is insulated with NZ-made Mammoth insulation, crafted from recycled bottles. All installation offcuts are returned to the factory to be remade into more insulation, creating zero waste. Installed using a cross-stitch method for maximum performance, this home was described by Mammoth’s rep as “the most high-performing home he has ever seen.”
It’s actually more than a build - it is a collaboration of skilled hands, local materials, and generational stories, brought together in a highly detailed home to last forever. To put it plainly - we’re proud of it.
Functionality/Innovation Design
>
This home has been designed to feel expansive, airy, and inviting. The gable-style high ceiling create an immediate sense of volume, while large bi-folding windows dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, flooding the space with light and making the home feel far larger than its footprint. It’s the kind of design where, upon stepping inside, the first word we keep hearing is; “Wow.”
The open-plan living area has intentionally been kept completely free of structural intrusions, creating a versatile space that easily adapts to daily life and the demands of young children to play. Clever planning means that the living room can double as a guest room when family or friends stay over, yet both the main bedroom and this secondary sleeping area have direct, private access to the bathroom without disturbing each other.
This flowing, flexible layout, paired with an abundance of natural light and uninterrupted space, makes the home not only highly functional but also a joy to inhabit - proving that innovative design is as much about how a home feels as how it works.
Aesthetic Appeal & Special Features
>
This home is as much a work of art as it is a place to live, with its beauty rooted in story, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design. To mention the bold exterior again, Shou Sugi Ban - Japanese cedar grown by our client’s father, who planted the trees 60 years ago creates a striking, deep black finish. This is not a flat black façade - up close, the natural grain and texture emerge, giving the surface a rich depth and character that tells the story of its origin.
Everything you see in this home is as far from ‘made in China’ as we can get. No Bunnings kit set kitchens or furniture. Literally everything you see is built and handcrafted by our clever team right here in our workshop.
The gable end, framed by the bold triangular window, creates an iconic silhouette that instantly captures attention and invites light deep into the home from such heights. Inside, the warmth continues with the ceiling lining, floating shelving, and custom cavity doors - all crafted from the same homegrown, family, Japanese cedar, bringing cohesion, natural beauty, and a sense of personal heritage to the interior.
Every detail, from the dramatic exterior to the handcrafted interior finishes, has been chosen to create a home that is visually memorable, deeply personal, and instantly recognisable.
The fly screens are another epic addition, let the home breathe in the heat of summer with no pesky flys or sand fly’s.
The fire place is a special feature being the heart of the home. Winter evenings will be made extremely memorable with this crackling away.
