Future Proofing
>
This design has high quality materials at the heart of it, therefore it is very sustainable as far as maintenance is concerned. The second bedroom is large enough to have a bigger bed when their daughter grows. We also talked about a small cabin to be added to the deck should Darrens's work space need to be larger or their daughter wants a private space. This would be designed to match the current space.
Liveability
>
This space has a beautiful open lounge area with build in couch storage. The kitchen is large with a rolling table that doubles as an office space sitting next to office drawers with printer. The chosen fireplace was large enough to cook on so site right by the stove top becoming an extension to the kitchen. The bathroom was designed to be a large space where you can spend time getting ready for your day; with a separate toilet room it frees up the bathroom to be used for large periods of time (think teenagers in showers)
Once on site we designed and built a deck that includes a large covered porch area for coats, shoes, bbq storage etc. This frees up the internal entrance to the house to be clutter free.
Workmanship
>
We always use high quality natural materials in our builds, but some the details in this house are breathtaking. The beautifully finished ELM staircase risers draw your eye to the attention to detail which goes beautifully with the treads made from NZ Beech to match the flooring.
We use Douglas fir framing, NZ wool insulation, Macrocarpa for mezzanine and window/door finishing work, popular ceilings, NZ beech flooring, redwood weatherboards and facings. We use natural oils and paints made here in New Zealand to minimise toxins for our clients, builders and the environment.
All our builders have a very high end finishing skill and take great pride in the work they do here
Functionality/Innovation Design
>
We design every house to suit the clients needs. R & D had a good idea of what they wanted but we designed with them to come up with an asthetically beautiful finish to meet all their needs.
The design is placed so the lounge has a lot of light coming in to make the space feel open and large, especially with the gable roofline. we opened up the wall between the bedroom and the lounge so creating an open space upstairs to let the light into the bedroom. the staircase flows nicely up to the bedrooms with full head height landing and wardrobes.
The bathroom has a SHUB so to create more room we built a 'pop out' area creating a larger internal space.
Aesthetic Appeal & Special Features
>
I think there are many wow moments in this build. the exterior work under the eaves looks stunning, also the copper finishing on the weatherboards and eaves look great. The under stairs storage with high end carpentry and soft closing doors look very stylish. The matching bench tops through the kitchen and bathroom using Tasmanian Blackwood give the space a very high quality finish to look at. We also LOVE the staircase, especially with the long window at the top of the stairs makes it feel so spacious.
