About this Entry
Future Proofing
>
The container used is second hand. It can be picked up by a truck and easily moved to another location. Being a shipping container, you can expand with adding another one to it - either going up or sideways, whichever way you prefer.
As the box was designed to be shipped over the oceans, it is made of thick steel and this ensures low maintenance. Very minimal preparation or groundwork is required before placement. The building functions fully on solar power.
Liveability
>
This single level (no stairs), tiny home with open plan living makes it comfortable and suitable for any age. The wood burner warms the complete space up quickly and gives it a very cosy atmosphere. The bathroom is spacious and the kitchen functional. The high-spec spray-foam insulation ensures comfort all year round (warm in winter, cool in summer).
Workmanship
>
The finish of the building is basic but very tidy. The plywood gives it a Scandinavian appearance which makes it feel warm and comfortable. The spray-foam insulation is above code and ensures it is a dry, healthy living space. Using traditional pink bats or other forms of insulation doesn't work well in shipping containers as it can cause condensation and mould problems
Functionality/Innovation Design
>
The bathroom is spacious and the kitchen functional with enough space to store everything needed, including a hidden cupboard under the bar-end. There is a pivot mounted tv to be able to watch it from bed. The container is a high cube (2.9 m high, with internal finishing 2.5m high), which gives it a feeling of more space.
Aesthetic Appeal & Special Features
>
Using a shipping container makes it a bit different than standard buildings. Its bold because of its bright red colour and not made out of conventional building materials. It is a repurposed box. Depending on the light-fall, it becomes more dramatic with the corrugated steel. When entering the cabin, visitors are always amazed that it is so cosy and stylish. Most people have the idea that a container is just a steel, cold box but it can be transformed into something really cool and practical.
